Leonard Payne & Son Trucking Increases Visibility Into Engine Performance

As a small corporation based in Bakersfield, California, specializing in heavy haul of farm, construction and other oversize equipment, saving every penny counts in a fleet of five major vehicles and 16 personnel vehicles. Leonard Payne & Son Trucking has been in business for over 60 years and has not closed their doors since 1953. William hopes to stay open for another 60 plus years, and Teletrac is enthusiastic to grow alongside them.   

Teletrac: Why did your company originally choose to use GPS tracking?

William: I needed to keep track of where my trucks were at all times. A lot of the things that we haul are time sensitive. And I heard that [GPS tracking] would help us keep track of our parts inventory and mileage on our vehicles. It would also help keep things up to date so that we don’t have to buy so much product to keep on the shelves. But mostly just keeping track of trucks, drivers, knowing when the trucks are idling, when they are shut down, and when they stop at places they shouldn’t be.

Teletrac: Prior to Teletrac, were you considering other GPS fleet software companies?

William: I had looked at few. But none of them really grabbed my attention like Teletrac.

Teletrac had more options and it seemed like an easier process to just order them and a [Teletrac] installer comes out to install the units in the trucks and set up the system on our computers. There’s no special programs I had to download or install on my computer. I can just log on with my iPad or my computer and everything is right there.

Teletrac: Is there a particular feature that Fleet Director offers that really stands out to you?

William: The fact that [Teletrac’s hardware] is tied into the ECM (Engine Control Module) and the computer system on our vehicles, has allowed us to find a lot of faults that we didn’t know existed in our trucks. We can get those fixed, which in turn has helped us find larger problems that we were having and further help with our fuel mileage and maintenance.

[The Vehicle Maintenance and Diagnostic Reports] allow us to not let our trucks get to a point where they are breaking down on the road and we’ve got to take them in and get them fixed. The more [I] know about [my] vehicles—in what [they are] doing, the problems that may arise—if [I] can get them fixed earlier, then [I’m] going to have a better run in the future.

I will have to take trucks off the road in December due to the new California EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulation and now I am able to find out what is wrong with my new trucks and get them fixed before my old trucks even leave the road.

Before, [without the maintenance reports], I would have to wait for those problems to arise and then fix them. And by that time I’ve already lost thousands of dollars on my trucks sitting on the road.

Teletrac: What kind of savings do you estimate Fleet Director brings to your company each week, or each month?

William: I’m on my first month and after installing the GPS units and after taking out the cost to install and my first month, we still saved about $6,000 to $7,000.

Getting Teletrac is the best thing we could have possibly done for our company. I can keep track of everything that's going on with my trucks and drivers. The equipment even picked up two codes in the ECM causing problems with truck 28 that we have been trying to fix for two months. It has cost us well over $5000 to date. But with the data from [Teletrac’s] GPS solution and the info from Cummings West computers, we are now able to fix the problems. We also found out the reasoning behind another trucks’ after filter burn off issues. Teletrac has already paid for itself and it’s only been one week!

Teletrac: What other benefits do you see that Teletrac provides your company?

William: Customer service is definitely a plus. If I needed anything, I [am] always able to just call or text or email [my Teletrac representative], and he [is] always sending somebody my way to get it fixed. The customer service is excellent.

And just some of the small features of having the GPS units on my trucks has made me decide to buy more. So I went ahead and put them in all of our personal vehicles as well. So we now have five major vehicles and 16 personnel vehicles with Teletrac’s units.
